Датчик поворота руля постоянно передает точные данные о положении рулевого колеса, скорости и направлении его поворота. Эта информация дополняется данными с датчиков поворота автомобиля вокруг вертикальной оси, акселерометра и датчика скорости вращения колес. Датчик поворота руля является одним из немногих связующих звеньев между водителем и электроникой машины, благодаря которому последняя «понимает», какой именно маневр хочет совершить водитель, и какие системы необходимо задействовать для помощи в осуществлении этого маневра. Будь то просто поворот руля для парковки или резкая «рулежка» для выхода из заноса — система соотносит объективные данные о траектории автомобиля и те действия, которые предпринимает водитель, вращая руль, внося при этом необходимые корректировки. Поэтому в целях предотвращения аварийных ситуаций исключительно важно, чтобы система была исправна, работала правильно и согласованно с действиями человека.
Существует несколько видов современных датчиков поворота руля, различающихся в зависимости от чувствительного элемента. SAS может использовать потенциометрический, оптический или магниторезистивный сенсоры. Последние два устанавливаются на большинство современных автомобилей, поскольку имеют бесконтактную схему, делающую датчик практически «вечным». В отличие от потенциометрических датчиков прошлого, современные устройства могут определять как направление, так и скорость поворота руля. Вне зависимости от конструкции чувствительного элемента датчик, как правило, имеет несколько одинаковых контуров. Иногда говорят, что устанавливается несколько датчиков SAS, что в принципе одно и то же. Это необходимо для обеспечения необходимой точности показаний датчика. Несколько сенсоров постоянно сверяют свои показания и при значительном расхождении сигнализируют о необходимости проверки и калибровки.
Несмотря на то, что датчики поворота руля спроектированы для обеспечения исправной работы на протяжении всего срока эксплуатации автомобиля, они, как и другие электронные компоненты, подвержены неполадкам. Датчики также могут выходить из строя при ДТП, неграмотном обслуживании или ремонте системы рулевого управления. Именно поэтому устанавливается сразу несколько дублирующих чувствительных элементов, которые обладают функцией самокалибровки и самоконтроля. В случае неполадки датчик сообщит о неисправности индикатором, связанным, как правило, с системой курсовой устойчивости.
В большинстве случаев благодаря надежной конструкции и большому заложенному ресурсу датчик SAS исправно работает в течение всего срока службы автомобиля. Однако автовладельцам стоит помнить о наличии этого важного элемента, а также о его влиянии на функции современных машин.
