Their love of home is a symbol of personal independence. However, English people have a real passion for adventure. In the heart of every proud Englishman, there is always a beckoning call of the sea, a romantic craving for distant shores.
The English are considered a very curious nation. For example, in foreign countries, they like to try new cuisine. However, they will not cook new dishes at home, as they are very conservative.
The English are a bit sluggish but strong-spirited. They can easily bear cold and hunger, overcome pain and fear.
English people are extremely friendly and helpful. If you ask an Englishman how to get to the nearest library, he will be glad to show you the way using different “visual techniques”, repeating the same thing several times.
English people are hard working. They work extremely hard, but always find time for rest. Money is the idol of the English. Their first concern is to work hard to earn more.
In addition, the English have a great sense of humor. It is the ability to laugh at oneself. Humor is highly praised in Britain.

BRITISH CHARACTER
If you want to form a correct opinion of the British character, you don’t have to concentrate on big cities, you should better go forth into the country, you’d better visit castles, farm-houses and villages and see the people in all their habits and humours.
For centuries the British have been known as insular, superior, aloof, hypocritical and unsociable. They look at foreigners in general with contempt and think nothing can be done better than in their own country. But ordinary British people are friendly and sociable. There are indeed two nations, they are defined as the rich and the poor. The traditional opinion about the British in earlier centuries was based on the habits of those Britons who could afford to travel, the diplomats and merchants.
Englishmen are rather conservative, they love familiar things. Most of them in the case of heating remain strongly attached to the open coal fire, although it causes much work and adds to the pollution of the air and sometimes pours smoke into the room which it is heating. The landlady of a large house, when she convests some upstairs rooms to serve as living rooms for lodgers, spends much money and trouble in dummy fireplaces, which would never be used. She thinks that a living room without a fireplace would be a room without the basic characteristic of cosiness, which it is her hospitable duty to supply. They are not misled by romantic delusions.
They are prudent and careful about almost everything. Their lawns are carefully cropped, their flowerbeds are cultivated. Everything is in order. Drinks are carefully measured, seats in the cinemas are carefully assigned (even if the theatre is empty you have to sit in the seat assigned to you), closing hours rigorously observed.
England is the land of clubs, pubs, gardens, football and the left-hand driving.
But no alcoholic drinks may be served to young people under 18.

Different nations have different characters. We expect every nation to have some typical qualities. The geographical position of Great Britain has produced a certain spirit among its inhabitants. Those who know the British say that they look on foreigners with contempt and think nothing is as well done elsewhere as in their own country. Actually the British have also been known as superior, snobbish, hypocritical and unsociable.
English vanity grew as England became the world’s leading trading nation. People say that Englishmen often think much of themselves. They appear to be very reserved and not straightforward. They like to hide their feelings. But British people have not only bad points.
In fact they are rather conservative and love familiar things and values. They got a lot of culture behind them and they stick to their customs and traditions. They are said to be very reliable, both socially and professionally. They seem to be very punctual and always keep their word. You can call the British cold, but deep-down they are very warm and kind.
I have read that Englishmen have a strong sense of private space. And they rarely shake hands except when being introduced to someone for the first time. But despite this, they are very hospitable and friendly.
In fact every national character is a combination of good and bad traits. But still you must treat every nation with equal respect.
