Choosing a Career
Finishing school means the independent life for millions of school-leavers. Many roads are open before them: technical schools, colleges and universities. But it is not an easy thing to choose a profession out of thousands! Some pupils follow their parents’ advice; others can not make any decision after leaving school.
In childhood I wanted to be a spaceman; then I dreamed of becoming a policeman. Only a few years ago I started thinking about my future career seriously. Life is quite difficult, but I want to have an interesting job and would like it to be connected with different countries and people. That is why I decided to become an interpreter. I am good at foreign languages. My favourite language is English. I like watching films and reading books in the original.
I think the questions- young people should ask themselves are: What am I interested in? and What do I want to be? When they find the answers, they will have the goal to achieve. If you are good at a particular subject and you want your profession to be connected with it, it is important that you study it seriously.
My father wants me to follow in his footsteps and become a physicist. But I am not interested in medicine and I am not good at Chemistry or Biology. As they say, medicine is «not my cup of tea».
Another problem is entering a university. Russian National Exam which school-leavers have to pass at the end of the 11th form is rather difficult, so you have to study really hard to get a necessary number of exam points to enter a university. Moreover, different universities have different number of «acceptance points». I have some friends who did not get enough points to enter the universities they wanted, so they had to choose other places to study or pay for their education.
However, some young people do not know which career to choose even after they «finish school, so they have to waste time deciding, or start working. For young men the situation is difficult because they may be taken to the Army that is why a lot of them enter any institute or university just not to become soldiers.
Sometimes young people choose a career to their liking, they enter a university and after some time they realise that the occupation they chose is not what they really want, so they get poor marks and have to leave the university.
The problem of choosing a career is very widespread among young people and they should think about their future seriously before making any decisions.

One of the most difficult decisions in our life is choosing what to do for a living when we grow up. Finishing school means starting independent lives and choosing one of the roads: a technical school or a university. Starting our life with a right profession is very important because the future of young people depends on this choice. That is why they must choose it with utmost care analyzing all pros and cons. Besides our friends and older relatives can influence our choice or just give a good piece of advice.
It isn’t easy to find a good job. You could be a very pleasant personality but still the employers won’t give you the position of your dream if you don’t have proper qualifications for that kind of job. So it’s essential to analyze what education and what skills are required for your job. To be good at computers and to have a good command of English is absolutely necessary for modern jobs.
In our modern fast paced world there are plenty of new interesting and socially important professions. The future profession must not be boring for you. It should suit your interests and your features of character. You might choose working indoors or outdoors, dealing with people or just with papers. In other words you should enjoy the work you do. It should also satisfy your career plans and professional ambitions. It should provide us with a chance of professional growth and personal development.
I am sure that all of us want to earn as much money as possible. However many young people are wise enough to follow a definite career and earn quite a low salary at the beginning. They realize that they have good prospects in a company that trains its staff and soon they can climb the career ladder. At the same time there are young people who would rather prefer taking any kind of work because they just need an income. Even so we must admit that any temporary jobs help us gain much useful experience and we can learn a lot.

В нашем современном быстроразвивающемся мире существует много новых интересных и общественно значимых профессий. Будущая профессия не должна быть скучной для вас. Она должна соответствовать вашим интересам и качествам характера. Вы можете предпочесть работу в помещении или же на улице, иметь дело с людьми или же с бумагами. Другими словами, вы должны наслаждаться своей работой. Она должна удовлетворять вашим карьерным планам и профессиональным целям. Она должна обеспечить вас возможностью профессионального роста и личностного развития.
Я уверен, что все мы хотим зарабатывать как можно больше денег. Однако многие молодые люди достаточно мудры, чтобы придерживаться определенной карьеры и зарабатывать в самом начале довольно мало. Они осознают, что у них есть хорошая перспектива в компании, которая занимается обучением своего персонала и что вскоре они смогут подняться по карьерной лестнице. В то же время есть молодые люди, которые предпочитают браться за любую работу, лишь бы она приносила доход. Даже если это так, мы должны признать, что любая временная работа способствует приобретению полезного опыта, и мы многому у нее учимся.

Finishing school means the independent life for millions of school leavers. Many roads are open before them: technical schools, colleges and universities. But it is not an easy thing to choose a profession out of thousands! Some pupils follow their parents’ advice; others can not make any decision after leaving school.
Choosing the kind of career to follow is probably one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Before you make this decision you will have to do a lot of thinking about who you are, about the things you like to do and the things you do well. It is an advantage to choose a future career while at school. It gives a goal to work towards and enables to choose a right, suitable course of study. When deciding your future you must be realistic about your interests and abilities.
There are a lot of magazines for teenagers that often offer questionnaires, quizzes or surveys to help young people to see their interests and abilities more clearly and to make a decision concerning their future occupation.
Frankly speaking at present I have a very vogue idea about my future career and I am unable to give a detailed account of the activities it will involve.
As for me in future I would like to become an interpreter. I know that interpreters have opportunities to visit different countries and continents. It attracts me, because I’ll get acquainted with various peoples and I’ll learn their customs, rituals and traditions. I’m sure that this creative profession enriches our mind and we become more educated. I think that an interpreter is a very useful profession, because it helps people to communicate. But of course if you want to be an interpreter, you will need definite qualification. At first you must know one foreign language at least. It’s good, if you know English (the language of the planet) and any other language. Also you should know colloquial expressions and slang. You should know the history of the country the language of which you are studying, ways of life that are typical for this country, etc. And of course you must be a sociable, communicative and patient person. I think that this kind of career will suit me because I have almost all qualifications that are needed. But I must continue to work with English grammar and vocabulary as well and German pronunciation. I like this job and I hope that I’ll become an interpreter. I hope that my dream will be realized. I try to read English books in the original, learn 10 words at a time and listen to English songs every day, because I want to fulfill my ambitions.
