Теперь о самой музыкальной пьесе и ее сюжете. Она состоит из семи частей. Это положенная на музыку Уэйкмана история короля Артура – повесть о временах добродетели, благородства и мужества, когда посреди мрачного и смутного средневековья существовало чудесное королевство, процветавшее под мудрым правлением идеального государя и его благородных рыцарей.
В ее основе лежит легенда о том, как, однажды Верховный король Британии Утер Пендрагон, воспылав страстью к Игрейне, жене герцога Горлуа Корнуэльского, обманом проник в ее спальню в замке Тинтагель. Через 9 месяцев родился мальчик, нареченный Артуром, которого отдали волшебнику Мерлину, дабы тот позаботился о возможном наследнике.
Мудрый маг доверил воспитание мальчика, коему он прорицал великое будущее, славному рыцарю Эктору. Тот растил Артура, как собственного сына. Других детей у короля так и не появилось. От брака же с погибшим Горлуа у Игрейны остались три дочери, младшая из которых познала искусство магии и под именем Феи Морганы сыграла роковую роль в судьбе своего сводного брата.
После смерти Утера Мерлин открыл шестнадцатилетнему Артуру тайну его рождения. И после того, как юноша ухитрился вытащить меч, торчащий из наковальни, что под силу было лишь «истинному по рождению королю Британии», он занял отчий трон. Затем Артур получил в Дар от Владычицы Озера волшебный меч Экскалибур, женился на прекрасной леди Гвиневере и зажил припеваючи в замке Камелот, обители добра, мудрости и справедливости.
При своем дворе Артур собрал всех храбрых и преданных рыцарей королевства — Ланселота, Гавейна, Галахада, Персиваля и многих других. Он усаживал их вокруг огромного Круглого стола, так, чтобы никто не считался первым и никто — последним. Мерлин учил рыцарей не творить зла, избегать предательства, лжи и бесчестья, даровать милосердие низшим и оказывать покровительство дамам. Затем паладины Круглого Стола отправлялись странствовать и совершать подвиги, побеждая драконов, великанов и колдунов, спасая принцесс. Но главной целью их паломничества был поиск святого Грааля — Чаши, из которой Иисус пил во время Тайной вечери и куда затем была налита его кровь. Долгие годы рыцари шастали по Британии в поисках реликвии, но вотще. В конце концов Грааль нашел юный сэр Галахад, сын Ланселота, после чего душа его вознеслась на небо (по другой версии, Грааль достался сэру Персивалю).
А положил начало гибельной для Артура цепи событий величайший из его рыцарей— сэр Ланселот дю Лак («Озерный»). Он влюбился в леди Гвиневеру и оказался не в силах подавить преступную страсть к жене своего сюзерена.
Племянник Артура Мордред (по другой версии — его бастард, внебрачный сын), сын Феи Морганы, разоблачил любовников и принудил Артура осудить жену на казнь. Ланселот спас королеву и бежал с ней во Францию. Перед тем, как вместе с войском отправиться за ними в погоню, Артур оставил регентом Мордреда. Племянник, воспользовавшись отсутствием дяди, совершил переворот. Артур вернулся домой и сошелся с Мордредом в битве при Камланне, где пронзил копьем предателя, но тот, умирая, успел смертельно ранить короля.
Меч Экскалибур был выброшен в воду, где его подхватила рука Девы Озера, а верные соратники Артура положили умирающего в ладью, унесшую его по морю на волшебный остров Авалон. Дабы утешить рыцарей, король пообещал вернуться, когда Британии будет угрожать великая опасность. Вот такая легенда…

Sir Hector, Sir Hors, Sir Blamour and Sir Bleoboris the only surviving knights of the Round Table, ended their days after a pilgrimage to the holy land; soon after the Saxons conquered all of Britain and the realm of Logres was over. Many believed that Arthur would return to re-establish the holy realm of Logres and save Britain in the hour of its deadliest danger.
About the year 1200 the monks of Glastonbury discovered the bones of Arthur buried near to those of Guinevere.
Beneath the coffin, a stone inlaid with a leaden cross bore the Latin inscription: ‘Here lies king Arthur in his tomb with Guinevere his wife in the isle of Avalon’
