My Favourite Newspaper Моя любимая газета Beginning to tell you about my favourite newspaper, firstly I would like to stress that the mass media and especially press play very important role in our lives.Needless to say that the mass media have done and continue doing much to excite and to maintain our interest in every aspect of the life in Russia. But I want to draw your attention to the work of press and its role in the life of society.The press is one of those few means of getting information, which exists in almost all parts of the world. Reading different newspapers and magazines, we learn about recent political, economical and cultural events in Russia and abroad, about international relations and progressive views, about ordinary and extraordinary things and cases. That is why I think it necessary that people should read newspapers and magazines.As for me, my favourite newspaper is “Moskovskiy Komsomolets” (“MK”, in brief). I am sure you have heard about this newspaper and have had a chance to read it. I suppose, it gives us a great amount of information and quickly and vividly reflects current and important events on its pages.The principal vital and actual problems are always discussed by the reporters of “Moskovskiy Komsomolets” and this feature attracts me much. On the pages of “MK” we also can find broad daylights of the political life of the country – this is another good tradition and positive particularity which is liked by its readers.

For all items and saturation coverage of occasions this newspaper offers a lot of columns and headings with brief and interesting headlines.

It goes without saying that the most exciting reports and latest news are always published on the first page of “MK” so that the readers could familiarize with them at once. To my mind, it’s very convenient!

Recently a great amount of advertisements have appeared on the news pages and on the pages of “MK” too. I consider this is wrong: advertisements occupy the space which could be used for news or reviews and must be published only as special separate periodicals. They reduce the quality of the newspaper as a source of information and affect its prestige, and this point should be taken into account.

On the whole my favourite newspaper meets my requirements and I hope that it will be printed in future. Но я хочу привлечь ваше внимание к работе прессы и ее роли в жизни общества.Пресса – одно их тех нескольких средств получения информации, которое существует почти во всех частях света. Читая разные газеты и журналы, мы узнаем о недавних политических, экономических и культурных событиях в России и за рубежом, о международных отношениях и прогрессивных точках зрения, об обычных и удивительных вещах и случаях. Поэтому я считаю, необходимо, чтобы люди читали газеты и журналы.Что касается меня, моя любимая газета – “Московский Комсомолец” (кратко – “МК”). Я уверена, что вы слышали об этой газете и имели возможность прочитать ее. Я полагаю, она предоставляет нам большое количество информации и быстро и ярко отражает текущие и важные события на своих страницах.Основные жизненные и актуальные проблемы всегда обсуждаются корреспондентами “Московского Комсомольца”, и эта особенность очень меня привлекает. На страницах “МК” мы также можем найти широкие обзоры политической жизни – это другая хорошая традиция и положительная черта, которая нравится (дословно – которая любима) его читателям.

Для всех тем и широкого обзора событий эта газета предлагает множество колонок и рубрик с краткими и интересными заголовками.

Само собой разумеется, что наиболее волнующие сообщения и последние новости всегда публикуются на первой странице “МК”, так чтобы читателя могли сразу ознакомиться с ними. По моему мнению, это очень удобно!

В последнее время на страницах новостных изданий и на страницах “МК” тоже появилось большое количество рекламных объявлений. Я считаю, это неправильно: объявления занимают место, которое могло бы использоваться для новостей или обзоров, и должны публиковаться (син. – выходить) только как специальные отдельные периодические издания. Они снижают качество газеты как источника информации и влияют на ее престиж, и эта точка зрения должна быть принята во внимание.

My Favorite Newspapers

Newspapers and magazines play a great and very important role in the life of a modern man.

The newspapers I read are the most readable and have a large readership or circulation. For example «Arguments and Facts» has a circulation of more than 5 million. Reading the newspaper I can get information about current events that have taken or are going to take place in this country and abroad. I can also read articles about historical events and public figures of the past. The pages of the newspaper carry articles on our economy, industry, agriculture and social life.

The newspaper contains and gives coverage of local, home and foreign affairs.

I like the way it presents different points of view, approaches to the problems, topical issues of the day.

My parents and I subscribe to some periodicals. There is no need to read all the articles. I can look through the newspapers and read the items I am interested in.

My Favorite Writer.

My favorite foreign writer is O.Henry. He was born in 1862. O.Henry is one of the most widely published American authors. His works have been translated into many languages. The best of his stories were published in books: »Cabbages and Kings», «The 4 million», «Heart of West» and others. His credo was-art should be true, democratic, it should address contemporary life and embrace all aspects of life. O.Henry was an outstanding humorist. He worked out and enriched all the types of the short story: the anecdote, the adventure story, tales and sketches. He was most famous for his stories of city life. O.Henry wrote about 150 stories with a New York background. He was a born writer of great talent. In childhood I was deeply impressed by his story «The Last Leaf». Since then I bear in my heart the image of a young girl suffering from serious illness and her friends doing everything they can do to give her hope and bring her back to life. The author penetrates deeply into a person’s soul and reveals its best qualities. His love for humanity, for common people, for critical attitude towards injustice attracts readers to this day.

My Friend.

I’d like to tell you about my friend. She is my classmate. She is very diligent and kind-hearted. She is willing to help old people and animals. She is good at mathematics. She is interested in history. She is bright girl and does her lessons quickly and easily. She listens very attentively to all the explanations in class. She is extremely fond of reading. I have much in common with her and we never quarrel, because there is no reason for it. We have common ideas, opinions and we discuss different problems together. I think she is rather beautiful. She has a snub nose, curly hair. She is a pretty girl.

My school

I study at school №159. It is situated in the center of our district close to my house. It takes me only 10 minutes to get there. I go to school 5 times a week. We study different subjects: Russian, English, literature, history, geography, biology, physics, chemistry, math and computer science.

Languages and history are my favorite subjects. I make much progress in these subjects.

Our school is a 3-storeyed modern building. It has many classrooms, specialized rooms, laboratories and workshops.

Specialized rooms are used to study math, chemistry and other subjects. These rooms are equipped with corresponding teaching materials, facilities and devices.

On the ground floor there is a library, a cloakroom, a dining room, workshops, a gymnasium and a head master’s office.

Our school is located in a picturesque place. The park where different trees, bushes and flowers grow surrounds it. There is a play ground and a stadium near the building of the school.

The English Language.

Knowledge of the foreign language is becoming more important nowadays. There are many reasons why we study English. Now, in a period when we are reconstructing our economy, when there are many joint ventures with foreign companies operating in our country, we need a number of specialists who know foreign languages. If you know English, you can communicate (personally or in writing) with others who use this language.

If you wish to make a career in science, you must read scientific books and magazines in English. Knowing English you can read the works of foreign writers in original.

A more general aim is to broaden our intellectual and cultural horizons through contacts with people of other countries.

Knowledge of foreign languages helps people of different countries to develop mutual friendship and understanding.

At the Theatre.

There are many theatres in my town, but they are all very popular with the public. Theatre lovers don’t miss any new performance at the Drama Theatre.

Children like to go to the Puppet Theatre and the circus.

Those who are fond of music go to the Opera House. I’ll never forget my first visit to the Opera and Ballet Theatre. My friend and I dreamt to see the famous ballet «Swan Lake» by Chaikovsky. The theatre was packed. The audience was well dressed, talking and laughing. From the first minute I was deeply impressed by everything I saw on the stage. The dancing was exciting, the music was thrilling. When the curtains fell at the end of the performance there came a storm of applause. The performance was a great success.

In the past people learnt about news from newspapers. Nowadays people usually learn what is happening in the country and in the world from TV or radio news programmes or from the Internet. Still we cannot imagine our life without newspapers. There are dozens of them on every news-stand. There are newspapers for professionals, for businessmen, for children and teenagers, for men and women, for sports fans, for those who are interested in gardening and for those who keep pets.

Some newspapers publish serious articles on politics, economy and finance, some aim to entertain their readers. Many newspapers express certain political opinion and people choose them according to their own political beliefs. In short, you can always find a paper which suits your interests. Besides, there are many free local newspapers which are put into your postbox whether you ask for it or not. Probably they are not interesting, because they consist mainly of advertisements, but you can find a lot of useful telephone numbers and addresses there.

My parents subscribe to Argumenty i Facty. I also like this weekly. I don’t read all the articles, but in every issue I find something interesting. I think that most articles are very well written, they give a detailed and well-balanced analysis of current events and trends in economy. I like to read articles on social issues, interviews, reviews of new books, plays and TV shows. One of my favorite columns is The Quotation of the Day, where they quote our popular politicians and give their comments. Sometimes it’s very funny.

Quite often I buy Sovershenno Secretno (Top Secret) and practically in each issue there are some fascinating stories which you read like a detective story. Sometimes they uncover things I have not heard about, sometimes they show well-known events in a completely new light.

From time to time I read Moskovsky Komsomolets. It’s one of the most popular daily papers, but I don’t consider it serious. However, I never miss an article written by Minkin. I think he is a very good journalist. I also like Merinov’s cartoons. Sometimes they publish good reviews of new films, new CDs and so on.

In short, I think that TV, radio and the Internet have their advantages, but nothing can substitute newspapers.

Я думаю, он очень хороший журналист. Я также люблю карикатуры Меринова. Иногда они печатают хорошие рецензии на новые фильмы, новые диски и так далее.

В общем, я считаю, что телевидение, радио и Интернет имеют свои преимущества, но ничто не может заменить газеты.
