TEXT My House Is My Fortress (р.132)
Vlad’s sister Nina and her husband Boris now have got a new apartment. They are really happy: they have been renting an apartment for quite a long time and saving money to buy a new one. At last their dream h as come true.
Their apartment is located not far from the centre, near the park, and a walkable distance from Nina’s parents’ place, so her parents and brothers can come to visit them quite often. It is on the third floor of a twelve- storeyed apartment house. There is a lift, of course, but Nina and her husband don’t use it, they prefer walking upstairs and downstairs. They say it keeps them physically fit.
There are two rooms in the apartment, a sitting room, which is rather large, and a bedroom, which is smaller, but very cosy, with two small windows; the view from the windows is to the park. From the sitting room one may go to the balcony and enjoy a view of the city. The hall is neither large, nor very small. The two doors lead from the; hall to the sitting room and the bedroom. A small corridor is to the right. It leads to the bathroom and to the kitchen. Nina and Boris have decided that the kitchen will be used as a dining room as well, because there is enough space to place a big table and a few chairs.
The young couple has spent most of their vacation making repairs. The ceiling was whitewashed; the walls were wallpapered and painted, the tiles were laid in the bathroom. The only thing that is now left to do is to buy furniture. This, though, is quite a problem, because it is very well known that good furniture may cost a fortune. So now Nina and Boris are discussing which things will be bought before they move in.
Nina: We are lucky that there are two built-in wardrobes already; all our clothes may be placed either in the wardrobe in the hall or in that in the bedroom.
Boris: That’s right, so we don’t need any wardrobes. And we have a bed and two night tables, so our bedroom is already furnished. So we must look for something to sit on in the sitting room.
Nina: Yes, a sofa and a couple of armchairs will do. And I want to have a table for newspapers there, too.
Boris: What about a table for my computer?
Nina: But you have a table for it already.
Nina: I saw a nice set of kitchen furniture in a store the other day. It is not very expensive, and I liked it. We must also look for a table and chairs.
Boris: Is there anything else that we have left out?
Nina: Yes, definitely! We have all forgotten about the curtains! What colour curtains do you want?
Boris: It depends on the colour of the furniture in the living room. The colour must also match the carpet and the walls.
Nina: So it is quite a difficult task to choose something to your liking. But we can’t live in the apartment without curtains on the windows!
Boris: Very well, now I suggest you going shopping and looking for a sofa and armchairs. Then we will go and choose the curtains for the bedroom: the wallpaper there is light blue, so it won’t be difficult to find something nice.
Nina: Will it be all right if we order blinds for the kitchen window?
Boris: Why not? As to me, I have nothing against it.
Nina: And as soon as we buy the curtains we can arrange a house- warming party!
Boris: Yes, I think we both deserve a nice party: we have worked quite a lot to make our house a home.

У сестры Влада Нины и ее мужа Бориса теперь новая квартира. Они по – настоящему счастливы, ведь они довольно долго снимали квартиру и копили деньги, чтобы купить новую. Наконец их мечта сбылась.
Их квартира расположена недалеко от центра, около парка, да и от дома родителей Нины совсем недалеко, так что и родители, и братья могут довольно часто приходить в гости. Она находится на третьем этаже двенадцатиэтажного дома. В доме, разумеется, есть лифт, но Нина и ее муж предпочитают ходить пешком вверх и вниз. Они говорят, что это помогает им сохранять физическую форму.
В квартире две комнаты, гостиная, довольно большая и спальня, которая меньше в размерах, но очень уютная, с двумя маленькими окнами, выходящими в парк. Из гостиной можно выйти на балкон и насладиться панорамой города. Холл ни большой, ни маленький. Из него две двери ведут в гостиную и в спальню. А направо – маленький коридор в ванну и на кухню. Нина с Борисом решили, что кухня будет служить столовой, потому что там достаточно места, чтобы поставить стол и несколько стульев.
Молодожены почти весь отпуск занимались ремонтом. Побелили потолок, стены поклеили обоями и покрасили, отделали стены в ванной кафельной плиткой. Единственное, что осталось – купить мебель. Хотя, это тоже проблема, потому что, как известно, хорошая мебель стоит целое состояние. Поэтому сейчас Нина и Борис обсуждают, что из вещей будет куплено, прежде чем они переедут на новую квартиру.
Нина: Нам повезло, что уже есть два встроенных шкафа, все наши вещи можно сложить в шкафу или в гостиной или в спальне.
Борис: Правильно, поэтому нам не нужны шкафы. У нас есть кровать и две тумбочки, поэтому наша спальня уже обставлена. Нам нужно присмотреть что – то, на чем сидеть в гостиной.
Нина: Да, нам подойдут диван и пара кресел. А еще я хочу, чтобы там был столик для газет.
Борис: А что насчет компьютерного стола?
Нина: Но у тебя уже есть стол для компьютера.
Борис: Видишь ли, он уже старый и неудобный… Но я с тобой согласен – вначале все необходимое. Теперь давай подумаем о мебели для кухни.
Нина: Я на днях видела в магазине хороший кухонный гарнитур. Не очень дорогой, и мне понравился. Мы еще должны присмотреть стол и стулья.
Борис: Мы больше ничего не забыли?
Нина: Да, точно! Мы совершенно забыли о шторах! Какого цвета ты хочешь шторы?
Борис: Это зависит от цвета мебели в гостиной. Цвет еще должен подходить к ковру и к стенам.
Нина: Поэтому очень трудно выбрать что – либо на твой вкус. Но мы не можем жить в квартире без штор на окнах!
Борис: Очень хорошо, сейчас я предлагаю тебе пойти в магазин и поискать диван и кресла. Потом мы пойдем и выберем занавески для спальни; обои там голубые, поэтому будет нетрудно выбрать что-нибудь симпатичное.
Нина: Хорошо будет, если мы закажем жалюзи дл кухонного окна?
Борис: Почему нет? Что касается меня, то я ничего против этого не имею.
Нина: А как только мы купим шторы, можно будет устроить новоселье!
Борис: Да, я думаю, мы оба заслужили хорошую вечеринку, мы хорошо поработали, чтобы сделать наш дом уютным.

США часто представляют, как страну небоскребов. Фактически, это не совсем так. Высокие здания расположены в центре (даунтауне), в них размещаются офисы крупных фирм, банки и магазины. Houses in the USA ( p.133)
The USA is often pictured as a country of skyscrapers. In fact, it is not quite so. The tall buildings are located in the centre (downtown), housing offices of large firms, banks and shops. Real America begins with little cosy houses designed for one family with children. Each house has its own style and «face»; its inhabitants decorate it with love and care. Of course, young people usually don’t bother about having a house of their own until their mid-twenties, and prefer renting an apartment to buying a house. As soon as they get engaged, they start looking for a suitable house to live in. Engagement lasts from half a year to three years (sometimes even longer), but anyway by the age of thirty the young couple starts living in a house of their own.
A typical house is two-storeyed. On the ground floor a sitting room, a hall and a kitchen are situated, while upstairs there are bedrooms. A garage is downstairs. An American will say: «I live in a two-bedroom house» which means the house is not very large, or: «There are five bedrooms in my house», which means the house is quite large. In front of the house there is usually a small garden or a lawn. In the basement there is often a laundry and sometimes even a gym! Winters are seldom severe in the USA, so the walls are not thick. The houses are built very quickly — it will take a building company three to four months to build a new house. Of course, there are all modern conveniences.
The houses may be located rather far from the centre. Living far from the centre is not a problem as every family member has a car.

I live in a new 16-storeyed block of flats. It’s situated in a very picturesque place not far from the Moskva River. There is a big supermarket on the ground floor and it’s very convenient to do everyday shopping.
Our flat is on the fifth floor. It’s very comfortable and well-planned. We have all modern conveniences, such as central heating, electricity, gas, hot and cold running water and a telephone. There are three rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a hall in our flat. There is also a balcony and we can enjoy a lovely view of the river.
The largest room in our flat is the living room and we use it as a dining room and as a sitting room. In the middle of the room there is a large table and six chairs round it. Opposite the window there is a wall unit with lots of books and a TV-set. There are two comfortable armchairs and a small coffee table in the right corner. There is also a sofa and an electric fire in our sitting room. We like the living room best of all, because in the evenings we gather there to have tea, watch TV, talk and just relax and rest.
My room is the smallest room in our flat, but it is very cosy and light. There is a bed, a wardrobe, a desk, an armchair and several bookshelves in my room. There is a thick carpet on the floor. The walls in my bedroom are yellow and there are some big posters on them. I like my room very much but from time to time I change it round. I quite often move the bed and change posters on the wall.
Our kitchen is large and light. It is well-equipped. We have got a refrigerator, a freezer, a microwave oven, a coffeemaker, a toaster and a dishwasher. We use it as a dining room in the mornings.
