They say that appearances are important. On the one hand, this is true, on the other, this is not quite right. A handsome man or a pretty woman can have very unpleasant traits of character and the opposite. However, there are exceptions, of course!
I want to tell you about my sister, Katya. In primary school she didn’t look very pretty. She had freckles, red wavy hair and was wearing glasses. All this made her clumsy and shy.
Since that time her appearance has changed very much, but her character has remained the same. She has grown up into a very pretty girl. She is of a medium height, slender and well-proportioned. Her hair has got darker into a chestnut shade. She wears it long to her shoulders. Her face has soft features, her freckles have disappeared, but her complexion remains pale as before. Instead of glasses she wears contact lenses, which allow her sparkling hazel-green eyes to shine. She has a small straight nose and a rather wide mouth but her enchanting smile shows her white teeth and makes her face look charming. No one can say that her gestures are clumsy any more.
Katya has nice manners. She is sincere, polite and helpful. She is not easily angered or bad-tempered. Her childhood experience has taught her to be patient and not to show off. She has still remained a bit withdrawn in some situations but she is good-natured, tolerant and sensitive to other people’s needs. She is always ready to help. These are the qualities of her character which I like.
She does fairly well at the university. She is bright, attentive and keen on learning new things. She tries hard to get good marks but sometimes her hobbies are more important for her than school.
Katya likes house chores and is not lazy at all. Unlike me, she always has her room clean because she does not mind helping her mother about the flat. Apart from that, like other girls of her age, she likes dancing, playing the guitar, and listening to modern music.
We spend quite a lot of time together. She understands my problems and I can rely upon her. We have the same view on things and even if we argue we always find a compromise. Although she has her faults, nobody is perfect.
I like my sister a lot and I hope our friendship will last forever.

When we talk about a person’s character, appearance always pales into insignificance. Why? Personally I am a girl of a character. I can be both cheerful and easy-going and at the same time thoughtful and reserved. It means that my mood is always changing, but still positive character traits still prevail. Speaking about my appearance, I’m very elegant. I don’t have a gram of excess weight. My friends say that my charm is irresistible. But I don’t focus too much on outer beauty. Inner beauty is much more important.

Потому что, какой бы красивый человек не был снаружи, его характер – это главный показатель истинной красоты. Откровенно говоря, никому не нравится жадный, бестактный, грубый и злобный человек. Совсем другое дело – общаться с милым, приветливым, щедрым и добросердечным человеком.
Лично я – девушка с сильным характером. Я могу быть как веселой и открытой, так и задумчивой и скрытной. Это говорит о том, что мое настроение постоянно меняется, но все же положительные черты берут гору. Говоря о моей внешности, то я очень элегантна. У меня нет ни граммы лишнего веса. Мои друзья говорят, что мое обоняние неотразимо. Но я не сильно концентрирую внимание на внешней красоте. Внутренняя красота гораздо важнее.

Appearance is the most evident part of a personality, everyone’s “facade”. It forms the first impression of a person and, at the same time, helps us to express ourselves. Although face features, physique, skin tone are inborn peculiarities, we can choose dress style and type of a haircut as well as decide what levels of neatness and athletics training are necessary for us. There are many sustainable notions and stereotypes tied with appearance: for example, someone dressed in clean and ironed clothes seems to be serious and responsible, a person who wears glasses – intelligent and highly educated. Often these notions are false, but people try to conform to them anyway.
Внешность – это самая очевидная часть личности, «фасад» каждого. Она формирует первое впечатление о человеке и в то же время помогает нам выразить себя. Хотя черты лица, телосложение, оттенок кожи являются врождёнными особенностями, мы можем выбирать стиль одежды и тип стрижки, а также решать, какие степени опрятности и спортивной подготовки нам необходимы. Существует много устойчивых представлений и стереотипов, связанных с внешностью: например, человек в чистой и отглаженной одежде кажется серьёзным и ответственным, человек, который носит очки, – умным и высокообразованным. It is possible to say that modern society is captured by the “cult” of appearance. The fashion industry, with special magazines, television programs, Internet resources, and books, determine the standard of beauty and elegance. Networks of boutiques and cosmetics shops become business empires, millions of girls and women follow diets to lose weight, and men build muscles in a gym… Some people even use plastic surgery to change their appearance.

In my opinion, appearance is a rather important aspect of life, but it is useless and dangerous to make it one’s main purpose. Pretty face and slim figure do not guarantee a successful career, true friends, or love. Besides, a standard of beauty depends on the culture, the epoch, and other factors. Therefore, the ideal appearance for me is natural, healthy, without artificial tanning and pretentious clothes. I suppose a person can look well without turning the beauty into addiction.
На мой взгляд, внешность – это довольно важный аспект жизни, но бесполезно и опасно делать её своей главной целью. Симпатичное лицо и стройная фигура не гарантируют успешной карьеры, верных друзей или любви. Кроме того, стандарт красоты зависит от культуры, эпохи и других факторов. Поэтому для меня идеальная внешность – естественная, здоровая, без искусственного загара и вычурной одежды. Я считаю, что человек может выглядеть хорошо, не превращая красоту в зависимость.
